ADVENT || DAY 4 || THE FIRST CHRISTMAS
Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’ Matthew 1:23 NLT
Imagine how much faith and trust Mary, Joseph, and Jesus had to have to walk out the first Christmas. A pregnant, unmarried, young Mary risked being killed for fornication. Joseph risked a ruined reputation (doesn’t sound equal does it?). Jesus surrendered his life to human flesh which would ultimately lead him to death. This first Christmas wasn’t filled with joy and peace. It was filled with uncertainty and anxiety.
This morning I read these words: “God’s plan required the submission of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. Submission to God’s will always involves risk. God has not called believers to live comfortable, convenient, and prosperous lives. He has called believers to live our lives surrendered to Him. A life fully surrendered to God will be uncomfortable and inconvenient, but we don’t have to endure alone. Because of Jesus’ advent, death, and resurrection, God is forever with those who have surrendered their lives to Him.”
If Christmas for you is uncomfortable, inconvenient, or filled with anxiety, will you remember Jesus is Immanuel, God with you? He will be with you and He is in control. It won’t always be easy to follow Him and trust Him. Will you choose a life of surrender; a not my will but yours Lord kind of life?
