“Being Right” – Resources

I’m concerned over the increasing cultural and political polarization in the US. I feel frustration because so many are talking, and so few listening! I feel concern because there’s so much emphasis on Being Right and so little on Being Kind!

We Christians are called to live lives that Faith-forward into the future. We are people of Truth, who follow a Master who called himself the Way, the Truth, and the Life. We are called to be people who love our neighbor and neighbors and who, like our Master, honestly address the question, “And who is my neighbor?”

But here’s what I see happening:
· I see an increasing polarization over politics, morality, and entitlements.
· I see many of my friends becoming increasingly fearful.
· I see so many sacrificing truth on the altar of opinion.
· I see love taking a beating as many of my Christian (and non-Christian) friends attack those they disagree with, refuse to engage in honest dialogue, and retreat into little groups formed around what they hate instead of what they love!

As Christians, we may choose to align ourselves with a particular ideology and political party. We may choose to support and promote political candidates we feel will serve us well and lead us wisely. We may choose to communicate our ideas and opinions with others on social media and in our small groups and at lunch and wherever.

We Christians are called to live lives that Faith-forward into the future. We are people of Truth, who follow a Master who called himself the Way, the Truth, and the Life. We are called to be people who love our neighbor and neighbors and who, like our Master, honestly address the question, “And who is my neighbor?”

But our true allegiance is to a leader who is not up for re-election this or any other election year. We take our direction and shape our ideology and form our opinions from a servant-King, Jesus Christ. And Jesus Christ has some clear and simple things to say about our lives in community and about our communication with those we agree with and those with whom we strongly disagree!

I recently addressed three important issues related to our need for “Being Right” in a message at Westside Church – West Campus.

· Faith – Living by faith not driven by fear.
· Truth – Loving the truth and refusing to receive or spread slander, gossip, half- truths, and lies.
· Love – Love for friends, love for enemies! Love that opens our hearts, love that opens our eyes, love that builds bridges and not walls.

It may take a little longer, but it will help you love and tell the truth. And it will do wonders for your credibility among people who value truth!

Grace to you,
